Photo of the Week

Torii Under Milky Way via Instagram @motohiro_astrophotography
This week for Photo of the Week we would like to present to you a slice of the east in this spectacular photo of the Milky Way over Ichinomiya, Chiba Prefecture, Japan taken by Motohiro.F. Underneath our home galaxy, a strange wooden doorway is visible; this is actually a torii, a traditional Japanese gate most commonly located at the entrance of a Shinto shrine. Symbolically this marks a transition from the profane to the sacred. In a way we could interpret the torii in this photo not only as a spiritual gateway, but also as a gateway to the celestial beauty of the starry heavens.
