Honda announced the end of any further developments in their humanoid robot, ASIMO. However, this does not mark the end of the company’s research and development into robotics. Instead, future projects will focus on humanoid robots with more practical purposes, such as the use of robotics in elder care and disaster relief.

The Fukushima disaster may have motivated the shift in the company’s direction as ASIMO and similar robots were unable to provide any support during the crisis despite their complex designs. For multiple years, Honda has been placing more and more emphasis into disaster relief concepts. Although at first these designs were comparable to ASIMO, the most recent prototype no longer carries the ASIMO name or aesthetic.
